Art for me, is both spiritual and sensuous. Therefore I state that it is the subjects which have chosen me rather then the other way around. On some mystical plateau, perhaps they wanted me to portray them. A great many of my works document the Jewish and Slavic experiences. Besides being personally raised within these rich cultures, for generations they had both managed to co-exist, not only through much hardship, but also thriving together with much positive and uplifting experiences and energy. That great positive aspect should never be minimized. One can find this harmonious co-existence depicted in many of my small town and village scenes. The "Shtetl", is the Yiddish word designating a small town with a big Jewish population, the other inhabitants of which were either Ukrainian, Polish, Russian or of other nations. The Jewish religion, as presented to the world through Abraham and later by Moses and his representatives, is a major factor in the cultures of the entire civilized world. The Hassidic movement with its tremendous humanistic as well as mystical elements , founded in the 18th century Ukraine by Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov has impacted me as a visual person not unlike it did on an intellectual level to the modern philosopher Martin Buber. Another influence on my work is the warm multi-faceted Yiddish culture with its music, literature, theater and films. Most people are familiar with that delightful play, "Fiddler On The Roof" based on the "Tevye & His Daughters Stories" by that genius author Sholem Aleichem. All of that is also my world. Still, it must be emphasized, that ethnicity in art can not and should never stand entirely on its own merits (irregardless of how significant) . It must become integrated as part and parcel of a higher artistic force, one's statements on universal humanity, spoken via one's own personal language (painting, in my case). This is why, I believe that my Jewish and Russian themed works embody such a broad audience appeal, with collectors and art lovers comprised up of all nationalities, religions and cultures.
